Fitness & Ability Level
To go big you’ll need to get fit!
It is important to have good cardiovascular and muscular fitness in order to enjoy, and maximize your heli skiing experience. We recommend that you engage in some kind of exercise program prior to your ski trip. Better yet, get several ski days in under your belt before your trip, and maybe even take some powder/off-piste lessons. The elevations we ski from are typically 1,000 feet (305 meters) up to 7,000 feet (2134 meters). Altitude illnesses should not be a major concern. You should be prepared to ski a full day, just as you would at a ski resort. The vertical skied from day to day can vary, but you should be able to ski 15,000 to 20,000 vertical feet each day (4572 meters to 6096 meters). The more fit you are, the better you will be able to overcome any skiing challenges and help avoid injuries, all of which results in a better skiing experience. We do offer custom packages and can tailor a trip to your specific needs, so if you have any questions please contact us.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be an expert to go heli skiing. You do need a good attitude, and respect for the mountains. Then as far as ability goes, most folks who ski well, and with confidence on blue runs do fine heli skiing. If you are a solid, confident, high end intermediate you are capable of heli skiing in AK, and having a great experience. Please know that we have no groomers, this is a backcountry environment. Our guides will not only guide you to, and through the terrain that is suitable for you, but are also great instructors and coaches. Powder skiing is the most fun, and easiest aspect of skiing to master. If you can ski on rock hard snow and moguls, powder is a piece of cake.
The Alaska heli ski environment is awe inspiring, and it may take a few days to wrap your head around the size, and scale of Alaska. Drop us a line and we can help with your ski prep.
